Elevator Talk: Does Domain Authority Even Matter for AI Visibility?
It started when JennyB dropped a study into Slack. Surfer had just analyzed 5 million AI citations across AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity — and found that domain authority has basically zero correlation with AI citations. Slightly negative, even. She asked the team a simple question: how important IS a site's domain authority to AI visibility? Does DA even matter at all?
What followed was a thread about observational studies, YMYL guardrails, what DA was ever actually for, and where authority goes in a post-Search world. Here's how the conversation went.
Frequency Isn't Quality
Backlinks Won't Rank You. They'll Get You Noticed.
Correlation, Definitely. Causation? Absolutely Not.
"Basically Zero"... We Think
AND ANOTHER THING: The Courts Might Rewrite the Rules
The Takeaway
Nobody on the team was surprised by the finding, and nobody thinks the case is closed. DA was never a ranking factor — it's an SEO-made proxy for signals machines actually do read. Right now, retrieval rewards semantic relevance, content depth and freshness, and original takes far more than an impressive authority score. But authority isn't dead: strong link profiles still earn crawls and reach, and as regulators start holding platforms liable for AI answers, some machine-native version of authority is likely coming back into the equation.
Build content worth citing. Keep building the signals that make machines trust you. And treat every "5 million citations analyzed" headline the way Alyssa does: as a correlation, not a verdict.
